Today is the release date for G.I. Joe: The Movie on DVD and 2-disc Blu-ray. First debuting in 1987, “The Movie” is a hot topic for many Joe fans. There are those that don’t care for it since it introduced Cobra-La to the Joe verse along with making Cobra Commander a snake person, and there are those that love it for everything that it is. Either way, it is part of G.I. Joe history now and is available once again, in hi-def! The G.I. Joe: The Movie DVD should retail for around $16.97 and the Blu-ray version around $22.97. So head on out to your local retailer to pick up this “classic” today! You can also check out our review of this latest release of G.I. Joe: The Movie here.

An interesting article over at Advertising Age talks about Hasbro and their Hub network and the challenges they have with current FCC regulations on children programming advertising.
As the Hub goes to the upfront marketplace, it will also be selling less commercial inventory than its competitors — a bold move for a new network that will launch with Nielsen ratings from day one. Federal Communications Commission-mandated restrictions dictate that an hour’s worth of children’s programming can only have 12 minutes of commercial time Monday through Friday, and 10 1/2 minutes on Saturday and Sunday. The Hub will only sell 10 1/2 minutes of ads an hour throughout the week, a tradition upheld from Discovery Kids, the channel it will replace.

The Herald News has an article on G.I. Joe that was posted the other day. It discusses the history of the G.I. Joe brand, but the really interesting thing from the article is what Global Brand Manager, Jeff Labovitz had to say. Labovitz says that along with the new Pursuit of Cobra toy line, a relaunched comic series by IDW Publishing and Larry Hama, there will be a new G.I. Joe cartoon series, G.I. Joe: Renegades will be debuting this Fall on Hasbro’s new kids network channel, The Hub. So it looks like all the “rumblings” we’ve been hearing of people auditioning and the recent discovery of this new show’s title are coming together. Hopefully we’ll hear more about this new cartoon series from JoeCon this weekend. Stay tuned for more information.

Shout! Factory has just announced that they will now be releasing G.I. Joe: The Movie in both full-screen and widescreen formats on the upcoming DVD release too. Originally Shout! had planned to release the movie in widescreen format on Blu-ray only, but now Shout! Factory’s producer Brian Ward, announced yesterday the decision to change that. TVShowsOnDVD’s David Lambert reports:
“…due to these strenuous fan objections about the DVD being full-screen-only, Shout! has elected to scale back the bit rate somewhat on the full-screen version of the movie, in order to make room to include the widescreen version on the same disc.”
So this is great news for those that can only get the DVD version of the movie. Huge props to Shout! Factory for listening to the fans.
