Since you didn't specify which comic book run, I am just going to assume you mean the original Marvel series. This assumption is also due to my having yet to have the opportunity to read much else that has since been published.
So, with that said, it looks like I'm going to be the minority on this one. Honestly, it would be a very rare instance where I would choose a characters cartoon representation before the comic book version. I always felt that the characters in the comics had a slightly more "real world" appeal to them. Duke was no exception.
Besides I should note hear, as I have elsewhere before, that Marvel Comics G.I.Joe #1 was my initial introduction to Joe in the first place. Fresh of the drug store spinner, this kid was hooked. Don't get me wrong, I loved the cartoon, alot, but even back then, there was just no comparison. The comics just had, what I still believe to this day, stronger characters, more (than not) plausible stories, and a greater sense of moral responsibility, without having to be overt about them (I'm looking at you "knowing is half the battle").
Yes, even as a kid I was very aware of these things. Thank my career-military grandfather for that, because he is perhaps the greatest reason G.I.Joe struck a cord with me.
