Alright, so Ive done a couple of customs so far. Mostly they have been kit-bash repaints of my own design. This was mostly to buff up my detailed painting skills after a few years now away from the model building/detailing world.
A few months back (at the advice of Jin) I purchased some Aves Apoxie sculpt with the intentions to try my hand at sculpting. It has sat in my toolbox now since then (I played with it a little but nothing to write home to mom about...lol) as I have been a little intimidated by it. However, after the positive feedback I have recieved from fellow forum members regarding my two customs so far, I have decided to step it up a notch and go for the gold for as the saying goes "All we have to fear, is fear itself!"
I am starting this thread to share with those of you who have never sculpted before, the struggles of a beginner in this league, and different techniques I learn along the way both from others, as well as my own experimenting. As I go with this thread, I welcome any and all feedback and ideas, but ask that you please PM them to me, and allow me to organize them and post them as and when I see fit. Any and all ideas I post that are not mine, I will surely give credit to the sender.
O.K., for starters I am also moving into the rhelm of doing customs of ACTUAL comic charicters that have not been sculpted/released by the big H. First in this line for me (As I only collect Arashikage Ninja) is the Jinx as she was seen in the "Special Missions: Tokyo" comic from Devil's Due back in 06-07.
I started with a base figure of Ms. Marvel seen here......

However, the Jinx I am going for here has some puffed out sections on her outfit, and is not entirely smooth, so I have began sculpting them on to the chest cavity. Below is a picture of the Jinx I am shooting for, so you can see what I am talking about.

Notice the area on the sides that runs over the breast plate and has the cross section that wraps around the back? Well thats the part I have started on.
Now, to get such a fine line, I recomend applying as much as you feel is neccisarry and push it into the body until it has the desired thickness. Dont worry about the width at this point. Then, I used the backside of a #11 exacto blade ( and in some cases the edge ever so gently) to shave the sides down to the proper width and push them back an forth until they where straight.
This is what I have now. I am allowing the sides to fully cure before working on the cross section so that I do not disturb the line I have made.

I will post more ideas as I go along with pics. Im no pro photo taker, but I'll try my best. I intend to follow this project from start to finish here and only here (no other forums) until it is complete. If you like it, I encourage you to check back as I will be updating almost daily.
