I think Tolan could be on to something.
Also, most of the Joes fans (I think "most" but could be wrong) stopped with Joe around '86 and was gone by the time of the movie. (of course later generations were coming around at this time)
So, by the time DIC rolled around, most of the big joes that the old joe fans knew from the Sunbow days and remembered were either gone or changed in appearance.
Also, like WW said, it lacked alot of maturity that the old Sunbow seasons had. (No offense to the DIC fans. I just believe it was more geared to smaller children.) And so, any chance of luring in the old fans from the eighties was slim, because those fans were older now and as teens or being in your early 20's, the silly stuff was a no go.
I think the powers to be knew that many of the joe fan crowd left around 86 and the movie, and wanted to revamp it to a new generation of kids.
There WERE lots of good shows in that Chuckles, I agree. One thing I always thought was neat was that Red Star, a Russian was part of the team. After the Cold War, it was okay in the cartoon world to embrace Russians and feel comfortable with them or having them on your team.
During the Sunbow run, the cold war was in effect, and the Russians were our greatest enemy and fear, so they were not part of the Joe team who stood for freedom, when Russia was a communistic country.
